Avodart (Dutasteride) is a medication for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is an androgen hormone inhibitor. It works by reducing the amounts of the hormone that is responsible for the prostate growth. The drug will reduce urinary blockage and also improve the flow of urine. The drug is not indicated for use in women and children.
How to Use
To ensure the safe use of Avodart (Dutasteride), let your doctor know if you have any allergic reaction to the medication or similar medicines known as finasteride (Propecia, Proscar). You should also let your doctor know if you are taking HIV medicines.
Avodart (Dutasteride) should be taken as prescribed. Each dose needs to be taken with plenty of water. You can take the medicine with food or on an empty stomach. Swallow the capsule whole without chewing, breaking or crushing. The drug needs to be taken for the whole prescribed period for you to get the benefits. It may take 3 to 6 months for improvements to be seen.
Regular checkups are required to ensure the drug is working properly. The doctor will have to check your prostate regularly. Your PSA may also have to be checked to detect signs of prostate cancer. Never miss an appointment with your doctor.
FDA Pregnancy Classification
Avodart (Dutasteride) is not for use by women and children. It can be absorbed through the skin so women and children should not handle the capsules. The drug can also cause birth defects when exposed during pregnancy. In case of any contact, wash the skin with soap and water immediately.
Store at room temperature and far from direct heat and moisture. Discard leaking or cracked capsules.

You should not donate blood when using Avodart (Dutasteride) or within 6 months of discontinuing use. The active ingredients are carried in the blood and can cause birth defects if a pregnant woman gets a transfusion with blood that has Avodart.
