Amoxicillin is a drug prescribed to treat bacterial infections. It is a penicillin antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections such as gonorrhea, tonsillitis, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, skin infections as well as infections of ear, nose and throat. The drug can be used together with clarithromycin (Biaxin) or lasoprazole (Prevacid) to treat stomach ulcers that are a result of Helicobacter pylori infections.
How to Use
Prior to using Amoxicillin, it is important to talk to a doctor regarding your medical history. The doctor should be informed of your full medical history and more so the following conditions:
- Liver or kidney disease
- Food or drug allergies
- History of diarrhea that resulted from the use of antibiotics
- Blood clotting
- Bleeding disorder
In the treatment for gonorrhea, the doctor may test you for other STDs such as syphilis. The dose has to be taken precisely as directed. It is recommended to take the medicine at the same time each day so as to achieve the best results.
For the Moxatag brand, you must take the drug with food or an hour after meals. There are other brands that can be taken with or without food. Read the label on the medicine keenly.
When using the oral suspension, ensure that you shake it well before measuring the recommended dose. A pharmacist will provide you with the proper measuring cup or spoon. You can mix the dose with fruit juice, ginger ale, milk, baby formula or water. Always drink the mixture immediately.
With chewable tablets, you have to chew the Amoxicillin tablet completely before swallowing.
If you are using the extended-release tablet, don’t break it, crush or chew it. Swallow it whole.
During treatment, your doctor may require regular blood tests. This is done to see how the kidneys and the liver are reacting to the medication.

Amoxicillin will not cause harm to an unborn baby. However, you must always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing a baby. The drug might pass into the breast milk and cause harm to a breastfeeding baby.
Store at room temperature and far from direct heat and moisture. You can refrigerate liquid Amoxicillin. However, you need to discard liquid medicine that is older than 14 days.

Some or all the symptoms of the side effects might go away even before you are completely cured. Keep taking the drug for the entire period prescribed.
