Augmentin (Amoxicillin/Clavulanate) is a medication for treating various bacterial infections such as pneumonia, gonorrhea, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, skin infections, tonsillitis, and the infections of the ear, nose and throat. This is a penicillin antibiotic which can also be used with other medications to treat stomach ulcers that are caused by Helicobacter pylori infections.
How to Use
Before you start using this medication, contact a doctor and inform him if any of these conditions apply to you:
- Food or drug allergies
- Liver or kidney disease
- History of diarrhea caused by the use of antibiotics
In the treatment of gonorrhea, the doctor will test you for other STDs such as syphilis before a prescription is given. You will also have to submit to regular blood tests during treatment to see how your liver and kidneys are reacting to the treatment.
Moxatag brand needs to be taken with food or within one hour of eating. There are other drugs that can be taken without food. Take note of the information on the medicine’s label.
Shake the oral suspension properly before measuring the recommended dose. A pharmacist will provide you with the right dose measuring tool.
If you are using a chewable tablet, chew it completely before you swallow. The extended-release tablet needs to be swallowed whole without crushing, breaking or chewing.
FDA Pregnancy Classification
The drug is not expected to bring harm to the unborn baby. However, it may pass into breast milk and harm a nursing baby. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding.
Store at room temperature and far from direct heat and moisture. Liquid medicine can be refrigerated but needs to be discarded within 14 days.
- Watery or bloody diarrhea
- Joint pain, swollen glands, itching or rash
- Easy bruising
- Severe skin reaction
- Pale or yellowed skin, yellowing eyes or dark colored urine
- Severe tingling, muscle weakness or tingling
- Stomach pain
- Itching or vaginal discharge
- Black, swollen or ‘hairy’ tongue
- Nausea or/and vomiting
Let your doctor know of all the drugs you are currently using as Augmentin (Amoxicillin/Clavulanate) interact with up to 55 known drugs. Your doctor should also know if you have any side effects to penicillin antibiotics.
Amoxicillin might inhibit the working of birth control pills. Use alternative birth control solutions when using the medication. Your doctor may also need to prescribe non-hormone birth control methods.
Even after the symptoms improve, don’t stop taking the medication until you have completed the entire dose. The symptoms may be gone but the bacterial infections may not be completely cured.
